Welcome to the Psychobiology Laboratory

Psychobiology Laboratory

Research in our laboratory aims to elucidate the impact of circadian rhythms on affective functions as well as the relationship between anxiety, depression and cognitive abilities. We have been utilizing rodent models to investigate the depressive consequences of manipulating circadian rhythms, either by photic stimulation or by means of lesioning the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) — a key regulator of circadian rhythms. A major thrust of our research on depression is to delineate the central neuronal circuitry involved in the etiology of behavioral despair as induced by forced swimming. In this context, we have been systematically investigating the involvement of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), SCN, septal nuclei, amygdala and hippocampus in depression and co-morbidity of cognitive impairment with depressive symptoms.
