Welcome to the Psychobiology Laboratory

Psychobiology Laboratory

Research in our laboratory aims to elucidate the impact of circadian rhythms on affective functions and the relationship between depression and cognitive functions. We have been investigating in rats the depressive consequences of manipulating circadian rhythms either by photic stimulation or by means of lesioning the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) that regulates circadian rhythms. A major thrust of our research on depression is to delineate the central circuitry involved in the etiology of depression as induced by forced swimming. In this context, we have been systematically investigating the involvement of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), SCN, the septal area, the amygdala and the hippocampus in depression and co-morbidity of cognitive impairment with depressive symptoms.
